Cantamaggio

Canta Maggio is an important event where groups of singers called Maggianti meet. Maggianti are people who sing in a chorus and they are called in this way because they sing especially in May, in early Spring. They wanted and still want to celebrate the arrival of spring. Canta Maggio is a meeting which takes place every yearin a different Italian region. Last year it took place in Montereggio, Lunigiana, in Tuscany. In 2004 Leivi was chosen to represent Canta Maggio.

At midday the chorus singers began to sing, competing with other singers coming from other towns. The audience listened to the songs and voted the best chorus. While the competition was going on, singers and audience could taste the typical gastronomic specialities of the host town. This year Leivi offered: pesto sauce pasta ( pesto in a sauce made of oil, basil, garlic, pine seeds and cheese, characteristic of Genoese cooking), assado and wine. The joyful atmosphere continued during the afternoon when the singers had the possibility to perform another time. Finally the prize giving took place and the winner was declared.
